More recent studies show that oral health affects overall health. Regular dental cleanings and exams greatly increase one's dental health and help keep their teeth for their lifetime. Keeping your teeth means better chewing function which aids digestion and health. Without regular dental cleaning and exams, early decay or oral cancer cannot be detected. Plaque will build up on teeth initially causing gingivitis (the early stage of gum disease) which can be treated and reversed if diagnosed early. Periodontitis is the advanced stage of gum disease where actual bone loss has ocurred and is irreversable. Poor oral hygeine is the most common cause of periodontitis. Common symptoms of gum disease are: * frequent bad breath * red, swollen gums that bleed easily * loose teeth * gums separating from teeth * change in your bite * change in the way dentures or partials fit Other disease studies shown to be associated with poor dental health are heart disease, stroke, pancreatic cancer, high blood sugar levels, bacterial pneumonia, low bith weight, and premature birth. Affecting heart health is a disease called bacterial endocarditis. Bacterial endocarditis is a condition that can occur when bacteria from infected gums get into the bloodstream and activate infection in the bloodstream within the heart. Bacterial endocarditis happens when bacterium lodge on damaged heart tissue or abnormal heart valves. Always ask your dentist if your are a candidate for pre-medication as this is a preventative health measure for those who have had a previous heart condtion or joint replacement. While gum disease can pose some serious health threats, it can be easily prevented. Be sure to brush your teeth at least twice daily, floss daily, and maintain regular dental cleanings and exams with your dental professionals.
